Below are results and reports for events that happened a few years ago.

Gloucester Hasler, September 2015

On Sunday the canoe club took eight students to compete in the inaugural Gloucester hasler marathon. The club entered three different divisions and came first in all of them. Toby had an outstanding first race, wining in division nine with a two minute lead which earned him a promotion to division eight. James, Will and Olly paddled well and all finished in the top ten out of 24 in their class. Inigo Hawkings won his race which got him promoted from division eight to six. Tom Else and Gus Griffiths competed over the longer division five course where Tom had a strong second half of the race gaining two positions finishing in eighth place. Gus led from the start and ended up winning the race by over a minute.

Wey marathon 2013

Leo and Oscar raced in divisions 3 and 5 amongst some very tough competition. Oscar was in 4th place until the last portage when a capsize saw three from his division paddle past. In the final kilometre Oscar caught up and overtook two of these boats and was just coming alongside the third at the finish line, a gutsy paddle to finish 5th out of 20 or so boats. Leo had some strong racing amongst some top level paddlers, missed a wash group at the start which got away with the top few in his class but managed to regain a few places in the final half of his 12 mile race to finish 7th. Both paddlers were 3rd junior finishers in their class.

Devizes to Westminster 2013

Following a strong performance in the Waterside series during the spring term, the Devizes to Westminster team did extremely well in the Devizes to Westminster Canoe Marathon, over a particularly cold Easter weekend.

In the four-day event, over 125 miles, in the junior K2 class Leo and Gus were placed second overall. Oscar and Will were placed seventh. These were the two most highly placed school crews in the event. Tom and Sam were placed 32nd in a field of 79 boats.

The junior K2 team event is strongly contested – past winners have included Cokethorpe School, the Royal Hospital School and Kelly College. Teams are made up of three or four crews within the junior K2 class – the times of the fastest three crews in each team are added together to produce an overall team time. For the first time since 2004, Bryanston were winners of the Junior Team Trophy and the Schools Team Trophy, ahead of eight teams from Dauntsey’s, Marlborough, Royal Hospital School, Kimbolton, Cranleigh and Bedford.

Although only six junior crews retired from the four-day event, on the overnight senior K2 race - with temperatures dropping to minus seven in the early hours of Easter Sunday – 45% of the competitors were unable to complete the course.

Emily competed with a non Bryanston crew, and came 8th in the junior mixed category

Waterside B 2013

There was a bit of crew swapping in this race with Will paddling with Gus and Leo racing K1.

Tom and Sam kept their pairing and finished mid-pack, 14th out of 31, with Will and Gus 15 minutes ahead of them in 9th. Leo put in a solid solo performance to finish 9th, especially impressive considering he was still getting over an unpleasant illness. Photos

Thameside 1 2013

With his partner ill, Gus raced in the junior K1 class and finished in a decent time in 4th place.

Oscar and Will were on the podium in 3rd, with Tom and Sam close behind in 4th.

Out of a class of 49 boats in their Junior K2 class, Leo and Gus finished an excellent 5th behind very fast club paddlers, Oscar and Will were 11th and Tom and Sam finished 19th.

Oxford Falcon Halser.

Will and Charlotte had an early start racing divisions 8 and 9 races respectively. Charlotte came second and Will won his class. They were both promoted. In the afternoon Gus and Oscar set off on the fast flowing 8 mile circuit. Gus had a solid race coming second, getting promoted to division 4, followed by Oscar in 6th just missing out on a promotion by 20 seconds. Finally Leo had to enter division 2 for this race so started alongside some of the top seniors in the country on the 12 mile circuit and came a very respectable 4th. Old Boy Alex Abraham and his father were also racing and special mention must be made to Alan getting promoted to division 6 after finishing near the front of his division 7 race.

Basingstoke marathon 06/05/2012

With the approach of exams only 2 paddlers attended the Basingstoke Canal
Hasler race. However both paddlers did extremely well, finishing well placed
in large races. Oscar came 4th in the Div 6 race and Leo

Devizes to Westminster 2008

Four Bryanston crews competed at DW 2008 this Easter.

Conditions were very challenging. High winds, heavy rain, snow, sleet and hail battered the competitors relentlessly throughout the race. At night, temperatures dropped to minus 10.
On the Henley Straight the headwind was so strong, and the waves so large, that crews were forced to leave the river and run up the towpath for 2½ miles.
In the senior overnight event, more that half of the crews retired – mostly through hypothermia.

In the senior 4 day event 40 crews started, but only 27 finished. Mr Colcott and Mr Hill were placed 4th.

Of the 84 junior crews that started, 73 finished.
Baz Street and Brad Jarvis were placed 40th
Jay Yates and Iain Fleet were placed 26th
and Max Milward and Charlie Markus were placed 22nd
Max and Charlie are also awarded the Shield for the Fastest Bryanston Crew.

Stour Descent 2007

On Saturday evening the River Stour was on the verge of flooding, with a nine inch gap under one of the bridges. However, against all odds, the river level dropped by 2 ½ feet overnight, allowing the race to go ahead, albeit in very fast and challenging conditions. Gale force winds, torrential rain and falling trees were but some of the hazards braved by the three pupils and two staff that eventually started the 14 mile race from Sturminster Newton to the Boathouse at Bryanston. At one point Baz Street was swept under a fallen tree and consequently capsized, losing valuable minutes as he struggled to rescue his boat from the swirling water.

The results were as follows:

Open touring K2

1st place: Jay Yates and Mr RJ Collcott

2nd place: Iain Fleet and Mr RJ Perkins

Junior Wild Water Racer

1st place: Baz Street

Elmbridge divisional marathon

Poole Harbour Canoe Race

Five Bryanston pupils competed at the Poole Harbour Canoe Race on Sunday.

Conditions were windy, with a decent swell at times.

Tom Frew and Iain Fleet retired after their third capsize; Ellie Grugeon paddled extremely well in difficult conditions to finish well up the field; Jay Yates was placed second in Division 9 and Rory Trow was placed first in Division 7.

A good start to the racing season.

Devizes to Westminster 2007

Photographs

Over Easter weekend, four Bryanston crews competed in the 4 day, 125 mile Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race. Conditions were challenging – warm, sunny weather meant that competitors had to think carefully about food and fluid intake during the event.
The participants braved blisters (and blisters on blisters!), cramp due to salt imbalance, and freezing overnight conditions to complete the event – described by many as the canoeist’s Everest.

After more than seventeen hours of racing, the Bryanston individual crew placings, from a field of 65 crews, were as follows:

Tom Kelley and James Silcock         5th
Ed Brimfield and Ben Hosford         6th
James Lancaster and Rory Brokenshire Trow  9th
Charlie Byron and Ollie Boyle  20th

The team was placed 2nd overall, beating 13 teams from other schools, including: Kelly College, Royal Hospital School, Marlborough College, Dauntsey’s School and Cranleigh College

An outstanding achievement by all involved.

A promising start to the new season.

Exe Descent 2006

The Exe descent is an exciting annual race where various classes of canoe and kayak compete down the river Exe navigating hazards including rapids and man-made weirs.
Our two junior racing K2s finished in first and second place despite one boat needing major repairs utilising a large amount of duck tape and a clipboard. Many boats competing didn’t make it as far as the finish line....

Devizes to Westminster 2006

DW Photos   Waterside D photos

Benjy and Will did extremely well at the DW qualification race - Waterside D – being placed 15th out of 22 in a time of 7 hours and 5 minutes. To perform at this level on the strength of only 4 weeks of training is an incredible achievement.  However, subsequently illness meant that this crew were unable to compete at DW itself.

At 4.45am on Good Friday, James Silcock, Nick Fisher Dodd, Tom Kelley and Ed Brimfield were roused from their beds to travel to the start of the Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race. This race, covering 125 miles in 4 days, is reputed to be the toughest kayak marathon in the world. A total of 45 junior crews entered from several schools including Kelly College, Dauntseys School, Cranleigh School, Churchers College, Lord Wandsworth College, Cokethorpe School, Trent College, Blundells and Marlborough.

The crews endured psychotic swans, a 500 yard tunnel, three long portages totalling some 5 miles, and severe blisters due to paddling at high intensity for up to six hours each day.

On Easter Monday morning both crews paddled together under Westminster Bridge at the stroke of eight o’clock.

James and Nick were placed 7th (19 hours and 33 minutes) and Tom and Ed were placed 4th (18 hours and 43 minutes), only a few minutes behind the boat in 3rd place. This is an astonishing achievement bearing in mind that two of the crews in the top three were coached by the GB Junior Marathon Racing Coach.

James, Nick, Ed and Tom should be extremely proud of themselves and should be congratulated.

OB entries:

Mike Piggott: placed 9th/27 in the Senior Single event (4 stages – 20 hours and 18 minutes)

Henry Dodson (with George Heaton-Redshaw): placed 23rd/ 116 in the Senior Doubles event (overnight – 22 hours and 48 minutes)

John Catto (OB and Artists Rifles): On target for a very respectable time in the senior doubles overnight event (5.47 through Newbury and off the canal within 9 hours), Captain Catto exhausted and hospitalised his doubles partner at the 85 mile mark (no mean feat, Hutch is a extremely hard man). Undeterred, he press-ganged one of his supporters into service for the remaining 40 miles, finishing in an unofficial but very respectable time of 21 hours and 44 minutes.

Waterside C - Sunday 19th March 2006

Thameside 2 - Sunday 12th March 2006

Our 2 boats were very evenly matched on the Thames, with finishing times 1 minute apart.

Waterside 'B'- Sunday 5th March 2006

Two Bryanston crews braved freezing conditions to compete in this 18 mile race on the Kennet and Avon Canal.

Unfortunately three miles of the course were covered with thick, impenetrable ice. Undeterred, Tom Kelley and Ed Brimfield, and James Silcock and Mr Perkins ran these sections carrying their boats.

Tom and Ed were placed 3rd in the Junior Class and James and Mr Perkins were placed 10th in the Senior Class.

Thameside 1 - Sunday 26th February 2006

Tom Kelley and Ed Brimfield were placed third in this 12 mile event on the Kennet and Avon Canal. Two other Bryanston crews also competed, producing respectable performances in their respective classes.

Duncan Slater, Will Thomas, Cat Fleet, Tom Kelly, Nick Fisher-Dodd, Ben Hosford and Mr.S.Jones competed in the Exe Circuit race.

A 12, 8 or 4 mile race, depending upon division, this was the first time that most of the paddlers had raced single (k1) boats and the first race at all for some.

The course started at Exeter quay heading upstream around a bridge and back down cutting onto the canal where paddlers turned at different stages dependant upon the division they were in.

Duncan Slater finished 2nd in his class.  Mr. Jones finished 3rd in division 5 closely follwed by Will in 4th.

Devizes to Westminster

Over Easter weekend, three Bryanston crews competed in the 4 day 125 mile Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race.

On the first day Joost Elias and Will Thomas, and Henry Dodson and Duncan Slater produced exceptional performances, paddling faster on this stage than any Bryanston crew has since 1992. Cat Fleet and Fred Neville-Jones were attacked by an irate swan four times, resulting in a capsize and the loss of vital minutes. However, other teams suffered similar setbacks, and at the end of the first day the Bryanston Team was in the lead by some 41 minutes.

A dry spell prior to the race resulted in the Thames being extremely low, with little flow to assist the paddlers. This made for an extremely gruelling and arduous second and third days, during which the Bryanston Team initially made, and then started to lose time to the second place team from the Royal Hospital School – made up almost entirely of paddlers from the upper 6th yeargroup.

The objective of the fourth day was to maintain individual positions and to retain the lead over the second place team. Following a collision between two Bryanston boats shortly after the start, an extremely tactical paddle from all crews on a very lumpy Tideway produced the following final results:

Individual

2nd place: Henry Dodson and Duncan Slater

3rd place: Joost Elias and Will Thomas

29th place: Cat Fleet and Fred Neville-Jones

Cat and Fred were also placed 4th in the Junior Mixed event.

Team

The Team won both the Junior Team Trophy and the Schools Team Trophy, with the Royal Hospital School in second place, 43 minutes behind. Although this at first seems to be a fairly substantial winning margin, it equates roughly to a difference in speed between boats from each team, of only six seconds per mile!

Following a detailed look at the race records, it appears that Cat Fleet is the first female to be a member of a winning Junior Team at DW.

Well done to all on an exceptional performance.

Thameside 2, March 7th 2004.

Most of our paddlers seemed to find this race quite taxing, the constantly changing weather and a couple of easily avoidable swims didn't help matters.  However, everyone paddled with determination and the results were fair with Will Thomas and Joost Elias finishing 3rd, Duncan Slater and Henry Dodson 5th, Cat Fleet and Fred Neville-Jones 9th.

Windsor Marathon, October 2003

Windsor proved to be a very useful race and one to keep in the diary for future years.

Five boats from Bryanston entered various divisional races and every single one had a really good competetive group to compete against with huge numbers of boats on the water. Piers Barnett had a succesful first ever race to finish 7th out of 43 in his div.9 class. Cat Fleet with Henry Wood racing together for the first time came in 14th. Henry Dodson was 2nd in his class until he was knocked into the water at a portage to finish 9th. Will Thomas and Joost Elias had a tougher race than they had bargained for against senior and very strong junior competitors to finish 10th in their div 5 race. Miss Bowen entered her first race and finished a pleasing 22nd out of a class of 43.

Poole Harbour. September 2003

See the Pictures

This being a sea based race it promised to be quite different to the canal or river that we're used to and turned out to be entertaining and a good test for all of our paddlers, new and old.

The experience of Will Thomas & Joost Elias showed in the lumpy conditions in the harbour as they came 2nd in the 8 mile div. 5/6 K2 race. Relative newcomers to racing Eleanor Ruddy & Nick Fisher-Dodd had a strong race to finish 2nd in the 4 mile div.7/8 K2 race.Henry Wood and Cat Fleet had a difficult time with an unfamiliar boat, capsizing twice to finish 4th div. 7/8, whilst Henry Dodson and Duncan Slater swam a few more times than that and had to retire rather than risk a capsize far from shore. Mr.S.Jones finished a happy first in the 8 mile div.7/8 sea kayak race.

Bristol Circuit 2003

A comparatively small team competed in the Bristol Canoe Marathon on Sunday Week 7.

Will Thomas and Joost Elias were placed First in the Division 5/6 K2 event, and Nick Thomas was placed a creditable fourth in the Division 5 K1 event.

Reading Circuit 2003 See the pictures

With very pleasent conditions contributing to a massive turnout, this promised to be an exciting race for the 2 brave Bryanston paddlers pitting their K1s against senior boats for the first time.

Nick Thomas had a good start and was at the front of his class until some senior paddlers left him with no room to manoeuvre causing his capsize. Fighting heroically Nick made his way back up the field to finish a respectable 7th in Div. 5 K1.

Joost Elias went into this race having been paddling a K1 for one week only and learnt a lot, including paying attention to directions at race briefings in future. He finished in 6th place in his Div. 6 class, not bad considering he paddled further than everyone else...

Mr.Jones and Mr.Perkins manged to fight off the under 16s and veteran paddlers in their class to win their Div. 5 K2 race.

Over Easter weekend, 4 Bryanston crews competed in the 4 day 125 mile Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race.

After a very hot Good Friday, crews were lying in 1st, 2nd, 5th and 17th place, and had built up a 1 1/2 hour lead on the next Junior Team, from Kimbolton School.

The weather turned on the Saturday, bringing 20 miles per hour, cold, northeasterly headwinds, combined with a drop in temperature of 15 degrees Celsius from the previous day. Conditions were horrific, and later described as the worst that junior crews had ever endured.

Will Thomas and Joost Elias capsized twice, and subsequently developed mild hypothermia. Following a full kit change they continued, completing the stage, but dropping from 5th to 20th position.
Mark Burton and George Neville-Jones also capsized, losing vital minutes, and consequently dropped from 1st to 3rd place.
Nick Thomas and Simon Murray paddled with determination in the face of adversity to take first position.
Despite these setbacks, we extended our Team event lead over Kimbolton to 2 1/2 hours.

Conditions improved slightly on the third day.
Matt Rogers and Henry Wood paddled a very team-oriented stage, providing support to Will Thomas and Joost Elias, who were still recovering from their battering on the previous day.
Only five minutes separated the first three boats in the race. Mark Burton and George Neville-Jones were lying in 3rd place with everything to play for. They paddled an inspired stage, covering 38 miles of the Thames, and moved from 3rd to 2nd place overall, shunting a Pangbourne crew into 3rd place, and leaving Nick Thomas and Simon Murray in 1st position.
The Team Event lead over Kimbolton was extended to 3 1/2 hours.

The fourth day was a 17 mile 2 hour blast down the Tideway from Teddington to Westminster.

Final Positions:

1st Nick Thomas and Simon Murray
2nd Mark Burton and George Neville-Jones
16th Matt Rogers and Henry Wood
20th Will Thomas and Joost Elias

Junior team placing: 1st

In addition, Henry Dodson paddled with a pupil from Marlborough to raise money for charity, finishing in 26th place. A creditable performance from an independent crew.

Mr. Richard Perkins and Ms. Cara Coolbaugh were the fastest to finish in the Endeavour Class, in a time that would have placed them 4th in the Junior event.

John Catto (O.B.) finished in 21st place in the Senior K1 class, a good result in one of the hardest categories.

With some absentees and a few illnesses on the Bryanston front the way was left clear for Will Thomas and Joost Elias to put up a fantastic paddle to finish in second place on the day. This was enough for them to win the series in the junior K2 class overall!

Matt Rogers and Henry Wood put in another solid paddle as our only other junior boat to finish.

Our senior mixed K2 crew managed to win their class on this occasion.

Nick Thomas and Simon Murray paddled in the face of rather underhand tactics from a crew which has beaten them in every race so far this term. Their grim determination and perseverance resulted in their winning the race by 35 seconds.

Mark Burton and George Neville-Jones were placed a creditable third, whilst Will Thomas and Joost Elias produced their best performance of the season, finishing in fifth place.

Matt Rogers and Henry Wood had a nasty swim in the tunnel early on which upset the rest of their day and knocked them down the placings.

The Senior mixed K2 Bryanston staff crew retired due to illness.

Four Bryanston crews competed in the Junior Doubles class.

This event is always a very hard race with many London clubs entering high-quality Junior crews.

The Bryanston crews suffered considerable setbacks early on in the day, including one broken rudder cable, but fought back fiercely in the closing stages pulling back several valuable places.

Crews were placed 2nd, 3rd, 7th and 8th.

Our senior mixed K2 crew finished in 3rd place in their class.

Starting at Newbury, the course is 9 miles to Aldermaston where there's a turn around to paddle back to Newbury. This is quite a tough race in good conditions, the wind and fishing lines on the day didn't help.

Four Bryanston crews competed in the Junior K2 class:

Two crews, Mark Burton paddling with George Neville-Jones, and Nick Thomas with Simon Murray, obtained exactly the same time, and were placed in joint first place. This was despite having started 12 minutes apart.

Will Thomas paddling with Joost Elias finished in 7th place, while Matt Rogers with Henry Wood finished a few seconds behind in 8th.

Ms.Coolbaugh paddling with Mr.Perkins finished 3rd in the Mixed Senior K2 class.

MELKSHAM TO BRADFORD CANOE RACE 2003 (See the pictures)

On Sunday week 5, five boats competed in the Melksham to Bradford Canoe Race.

Junior boats competed over a distance of 7 miles, but the Bryanston K2s opted to compete in the ‘Open’ class in order to paddle the longer race of 12 miles alongside senior crews.

Following a fierce mass start on a crowded river, the Bryanston crews soon settled into a good racing pace. Despite problems at a rather difficult portage, the Bryanston boats finished:

Open racing K2 class (against senior crews)

1st place: Nick Thomas and Simon Murray 1h34.18

2nd place: Mark Burton and George Neville-Jones 1h37.20

3rd place: Ms. Coolbaugh and Mr. Perkins 1h41.33

4th place: Will Thomas and Joost Elias 1h44.34

Matt Rogers, recovering from recent illness, competed in the Junior K1 class over 7 miles, finishing a creditable 2nd in 1h14.05.
