Stour Descent 2007On Saturday evening the River Stour was on the verge of flooding, with a nine inch gap under one of the bridges. However, against all odds, the river level dropped by 2 ½ feet overnight, allowing the race to go ahead, albeit in very fast and challenging conditions. Gale force winds, torrential rain and falling trees were but some of the hazards braved by the three pupils and two staff that eventually started the 14 mile race from Sturminster Newton to the Boathouse at Bryanston. At one point Baz Street was swept under a fallen tree and consequently capsized, losing valuable minutes as he struggled to rescue his boat from the swirling water. The results were as follows: Open touring K2 1st place: Jay Yates and Mr RJ Collcott 2nd place: Iain Fleet and Mr RJ Perkins Junior Wild Water Racer 1st place: Baz Street

Devizes to Westminster 2006Benjy Barkes and Will Spratt did extremely well at the DW qualification race - Waterside D – being placed 15th out of 22 in a time of 7 hours and 5 minutes. To perform at this level on the strength of only 4 weeks of training is an incredible achievement. However, subsequently illness meant that this crew were unable to compete at DW itself. At 4.45am on Good Friday, James Silcock, Nick Fisher Dodd, Tom Kelley and Ed Brimfield were roused from their beds to travel to the start of the Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race. This race, covering 125 miles in 4 days, is reputed to be the toughest kayak marathon in the world. A total of 45 junior crews entered from several schools including Kelly College, Dauntseys School, Cranleigh School, Churchers College, Lord Wandsworth College, Cokethorpe School, Trent College, Blundells and Marlborough. The crews endured psychotic swans, a 500 yard tunnel, three long portages totalling some 5 miles, and severe blisters due to paddling at high intensity for up to six hours each day. On Easter Monday morning both crews paddled together under Westminster Bridge at the stroke of eight o’clock. James and Nick were placed 7th (19 hours and 33 minutes) and Tom and Ed were placed 4th (18 hours and 43 minutes), only a few minutes behind the boat in 3rd place. This is an astonishing achievement bearing in mind that two of the crews in the top three were coached by the GB Junior Marathon Racing Coach. James, Nick, Ed and Tom should be extremely proud of themselves and should be congratulated. OB entries:Mike Piggott: placed 9th/27 in the Senior Single event (4 stages – 20 hours and 18 minutes) Henry Dodson (with George Heaton-Redshaw): placed 23rd/ 116 in the Senior Doubles event (overnight – 22 hours and 48 minutes) John Catto (OB and Artists Rifles): On target for a very respectable time in the senior doubles overnight event (5.47 through Newbury and off the canal within 9 hours), Captain Catto exhausted and hospitalised his doubles partner at the 85 mile mark (no mean feat, Hutch is a extremely hard man). Undeterred, he press-ganged one of his supporters into service for the remaining 40 miles, finishing in an unofficial but very respectable time of 21 hours and 44 minutes.

Waterside 'B'- Sunday 5th March 2006Two Bryanston crews braved freezing conditions to compete in this 18 mile race on the Kennet and Avon Canal. Unfortunately three miles of the course were covered with thick, impenetrable ice. Undeterred, Tom Kelley and Ed Brimfield, and James Silcock and Mr Perkins ran these sections carrying their boats. Tom and Ed were placed 3rd in the Junior Class and James and Mr Perkins were placed 10th in the Senior Class.

Waterside 'A' - Sunday 19th February 2006In the first of six races building up to the Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race, two Bryanston crews raced over a distance of 13 miles to finish in 5th and 7th positions, behind some impressive crews from the Thames Valley, and ahead of crews from Marlborough, Bedford, Kelly College and Kimbolton. |
Four Bryanston boats tackled 19 ice-cold miles of the Exe Descent.
Very low water levels made for a very technical and physically demanding course, with some crews capsizing on more than one occasion.
Nick Fisher Dodd and Ed Brimfield: 1st place Junior K2 (despite finishing the race two feet underwater.), 3h35m
Will Palmer and Cat Fleet: 8th place Open Touring K2, 3h05m
Mr Perkins and James Silcock: 13th place Senior K2, 3h00m
Mr Collcott: 3rd place Senior Wild Water Racer, 2h59m

Pupil version of the report here!
Ed Kingston and Nick Fisher Dodd, and Ed Brimfield and Ben Hosford competed in the gruelling 125-mile Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race over Easter Weekend at the beginning of the Easter holiday.
This event is internationally billed as the “Canoeist’s Everest” and has been described as “the most gruelling canoe race in the world.”
After more than 19 hours of racing spread over four days, including 76 locks and portages, Nick Fisher Dodd and Ed Kingston were placed 10th and Ed Brimfield and Ben Hosford were placed 6th in a field of 54 other Junior Crews.
This can only be described as an excellent performance from a young squad, in a season riddled with injury and mishap. These very creditable results bode extremely well for the future.
Simon Jones
A race over 34 miles from Devizes to Newbury.
Ed Brimfield and Ben Hosford paddling an excellent race to finish 6th in Junior K2 (out of 25).
Nick Fisher-Dodd and Ed Kingston also paddled well to finish not far behind in 9th position.
Josh Barnes and Oli Williams, paddling for a charity, on their 1st ever race, 5th time in a kayak together, showed true grit and determination finishing in 25th place when a lot of others would have given up.
James Silcock and Ed Brimfield braved ice and freezing conditions to compete
in
Waterside C. They were placed 8th out of 31 crews in the Junior
K2 class.
Nick Fisher-Dodd and SHJ were placed 15th in the Senior K2 class, they would have been higher in the results but stopped to help a crew from Royal Hospital School that had fallen into the canal, losing them about 10 minutes.

All of the Bryanston team paddled very well, putting in good performances and enjoying the racing.
There was a large field at this race.
Out of 34 junior crews,
Bryanston entered 5 junior crews, (10 pupils in 5 K2s) and a senior mixed
K2.
For many of our paddlers this was their first race with new partners.
From the results and times we can see that we have a solid base from which to progress.
Everyone performed exceptionally well, seeing off competition from several strong school clubs.
The following crews achieved podium positions:
2nd place: James Silcock and Ed Brimfield
3rd place: Nick Fisher-Dodd and Ed Kingston
1st place: Richard Harding and Matt Foster
2nd place: Henry Dodson
1st place: Fred Neville-Jones

Duncan Slater, Will Thomas, Cat Fleet, Tom Kelly, Nick Fisher-Dodd, Ben Hosford and Mr.S.Jones competed in the Exe Circuit race.
A 12, 8 or 4 mile race, depending upon division, this was the first time that most of the paddlers had raced single (k1) boats and the first race at all for some.
The course started at Exeter quay heading upstream around a bridge and back down cutting onto the canal where paddlers turned at different stages dependant upon the division they were in.
Duncan Slater finished 2nd in his class. Mr. Jones finished 3rd in division 5 closely follwed by Will in 4th.

Over Easter weekend, three Bryanston crews competed in the 4 day 125 mile Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race.
On the first day Joost Elias and Will Thomas, and Henry Dodson and Duncan Slater produced exceptional performances, paddling faster on this stage than any Bryanston crew has since 1992. Cat Fleet and Fred Neville-Jones were attacked by an irate swan four times, resulting in a capsize and the loss of vital minutes. However, other teams suffered similar setbacks, and at the end of the first day the Bryanston Team was in the lead by some 41 minutes.
A dry spell prior to the race resulted in the Thames being extremely low, with little flow to assist the paddlers. This made for an extremely gruelling and arduous second and third days, during which the Bryanston Team initially made, and then started to lose time to the second place team from the Royal Hospital School – made up almost entirely of paddlers from the upper 6th yeargroup.
The objective of the fourth day was to maintain individual positions and to retain the lead over the second place team. Following a collision between two Bryanston boats shortly after the start, an extremely tactical paddle from all crews on a very lumpy Tideway produced the following final results:
2nd place: Henry Dodson and Duncan Slater
3rd place: Joost Elias and Will Thomas
29th place: Cat Fleet and Fred Neville-Jones
Cat and Fred were also placed 4th in the Junior Mixed event.
The Team won both the Junior Team Trophy and the Schools Team Trophy, with the Royal Hospital School in second place, 43 minutes behind. Although this at first seems to be a fairly substantial winning margin, it equates roughly to a difference in speed between boats from each team, of only six seconds per mile!
Following a detailed look at the race records, it appears that Cat Fleet is the first female to be a member of a winning Junior Team at DW.
Well done to all on an exceptional performance.
SHJ
Joost Elias and Will Thomas were placed 2nd, Henry Dodson and Duncan Slater were placed 3rd. Cat Fleet and Fred Neville-Jones finished in10th place equivalent overall in the Juniors and were the fastest Junior mixed crew coming in 5th out of 13 in the mixed overall.
Most of our paddlers seemed to find this race quite taxing, the constantly changing weather and a couple of easily avoidable swims didn't help matters. However, everyone paddled with determination and the results were fair with Will Thomas and Joost Elias finishing 3rd, Duncan Slater and Henry Dodson 5th, Cat Fleet and Fred Neville-Jones 9th.
Joost Elias and Will Thomas finished in 4th position with Henry Dodson and Duncan Slater just behind in 5th. Fred Neville-Jones and Cat Fleet finished in 6th place in the mixed K2 class in a time that would have placed them 14th behind our other 2 boats.

Windsor Marathon, October 2003
Windsor proved to be a very useful race and one to keep in the diary for future years.
Five boats from Bryanston entered various divisional races and every single one had a really good competetive group to compete against with huge numbers of boats on the water. Piers Barnett had a succesful first ever race to finish 7th out of 43 in his div.9 class. Cat Fleet with Henry Wood racing together for the first time came in 14th. Henry Dodson was 2nd in his class until he was knocked into the water at a portage to finish 9th. Will Thomas and Joost Elias had a tougher race than they had bargained for against senior and very strong junior competitors to finish 10th in their div 5 race. Miss Bowen entered her first race and finished a pleasing 22nd out of a class of 43.
RJP
This being a sea based race it promised to be quite different to the canal or river that we're used to and turned out to be entertaining and a good test for all of our paddlers, new and old.
The experience of Will Thomas & Joost Elias showed in the lumpy conditions
in the harbour as they came 2nd in the 8 mile div. 5/6 K2 race. Relative
newcomers to racing Eleanor Ruddy & Nick Fisher-Dodd had a strong race
to finish 2nd in the 4 mile div.7/8 K2 race.Henry Wood and Cat Fleet had
a difficult time with an unfamiliar boat, capsizing twice to finish 4th div.
7/8, whilst Henry Dodson and Duncan Slater swam a few more times than that
and had to retire rather than risk a capsize far from shore. Mr.S.Jones finished
a happy first in the 8 mile div.7/8 sea kayak race.
Bristol Circuit 2003
A comparatively small team competed in the Bristol Canoe Marathon on Sunday

Reading Circuit 2003 See the pictures
With very pleasent conditions contributing to a massive turnout, this promised to be an exciting race for the 2 brave Bryanston paddlers pitting their K1s against senior boats for the first time.
Nick Thomas had a good start and was at the front of his class until some senior paddlers left him with no room to manoeuvre causing his capsize. Fighting heroically Nick made his way back up the field to finish a respectable 7th in Div. 5 K1.
Joost Elias went into this race having been paddling a K1 for one week only and learnt a lot, including paying attention to directions at race briefings in future. He finished in 6th place in his Div. 6 class, not bad considering he paddled further than everyone else...
Mr.Jones and Mr.Perkins manged to fight off the under 16s and veteran paddlers in their class to win their Div. 5 K2 race.

Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race 2003.
There are lots if pictures, go to the Images page to select some.
Over Easter weekend, 4 Bryanston crews competed in the 4 day 125 mile Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race.
After a very hot Good Friday, crews were lying in 1st, 2nd, 5th and 17th place, and had built up a 1 1/2 hour lead on the next Junior Team, from Kimbolton School.
The weather turned on the Saturday, bringing 20 miles per hour, cold, northeasterly headwinds, combined with a drop in temperature of 15 degrees Celsius from the previous day. Conditions were horrific, and later described as the worst that junior crews had ever endured.
Will Thomas and Joost Elias capsized twice, and subsequently developed
mild hypothermia. Following a full kit change they continued, completing
the stage, but dropping from 5th to 20th position.
Mark Burton and George Neville-Jones also capsized, losing vital minutes,
and consequently dropped from 1st to 3rd place.
Nick Thomas and Simon Murray paddled with determination in the face of adversity
to take first position.
Despite these setbacks, we extended our Team event lead over Kimbolton to
2 1/2 hours.
Conditions improved slightly on the third day.
Matt Rogers and Henry Wood paddled a very team-oriented stage, providing
support to Will Thomas and Joost Elias, who were still recovering from
their battering on the previous day.
Only five minutes separated the first three boats in the race. Mark Burton
and George Neville-Jones were lying in 3rd place with everything to play
for. They paddled an inspired stage, covering 38 miles of the Thames, and
moved from 3rd to 2nd place overall, shunting a Pangbourne crew into 3rd
place, and leaving Nick Thomas and Simon Murray in 1st position.
The Team Event lead over Kimbolton was extended to 3 1/2 hours.
The fourth day was a 17 mile 2 hour blast down the Tideway from Teddington to Westminster.
Final Positions:
1st Nick Thomas and Simon Murray
2nd Mark Burton and George Neville-Jones
16th Matt Rogers and Henry Wood
20th Will Thomas and Joost Elias
Junior team placing: 1st
In addition, Henry Dodson paddled with a pupil from Marlborough to raise money for charity, finishing in 26th place. A creditable performance from an independent crew.
Mr. Richard Perkins and Ms. Cara Coolbaugh were the fastest to finish in the Endeavour Class, in a time that would have placed them 4th in the Junior event.
John Catto (O.B.) finished in 21st place in the Senior K1 class, a good result in one of the hardest categories.
Waterside D 2003 - 34 miles on the Kennet and Avon Canal. Sorry, no pictures, if you have any I'll add them!
With some absentees and a few illnesses on the Bryanston front the way was left clear for Will Thomas and Joost Elias to put up a fantastic paddle to finish in second place on the day. This was enough for them to win the series in the junior K2 class overall!
Matt Rogers and Henry Wood put in another solid paddle as our only other junior boat to finish.
Our senior mixed K2 crew managed to win their class on this occasion.
Waterside C 2003 23 miles on the Kennet and Avon Canal. See the pictures.
Nick Thomas and Simon Murray paddled in the face of rather underhand tactics from a crew which has beaten them in every race so far this term. Their grim determination and perseverance resulted in their winning the race by 35 seconds.
Mark Burton and George Neville-Jones were placed a creditable third, whilst Will Thomas and Joost Elias produced their best performance of the season, finishing in fifth place.
Matt Rogers and Henry Wood had a nasty swim in the tunnel early on which upset the rest of their day and knocked them down the placings.
The Senior mixed K2 Bryanston staff crew retired due to illness.

Junior boats competed over a distance of 7 miles, but the Bryanston K2s opted to compete in the Open class in order to paddle the longer race of 12 miles alongside senior crews.
Following a fierce mass start on a crowded river, the Bryanston crews soon settled into a good racing pace. Despite problems at a rather difficult portage, the Bryanston boats finished:
