The group has just returned from yet another successful trip. The weather was mostly good, the crews covered about 100km of training, and the behaviour and atmosphere were excellent.
Results from the major heads last week will be posted soon - they were OK, but we need to work harder to try to compete with the best.

A warm welcome to all our new parents, particularly those of our large and enthusiastic gang of D's.
Congratulations to the following on their appointment as
Vice Captains:
James Dodd, Bella Kidd, Harriet Daly, Jamie Townsend
Piers Barnett and Christabel Adam are the Captains.
Thank you to the parents of the D's who visited on Saturday 28th.
Although it was bitterly cold we hope you enjoyed the try it out session, coached by your loved ones.
SWITZERLAND
We have ended up with a group of 15. This will be our last trip for a while. We have found it difficult to attract all the top C scullers this year and we intend to reinvent the trip in 2009 for B and above (i.e. particularly targetting this year's and next year's D's).

Apologies for the lack of news recently.
Some good results have come in, particularly from Piers Barnett and James Dodd - they will be posted soon.
A warm welcome to our new coaches:
Spencer Allen, Chris Horne, Caroline Dawson.
Piers Barnett will be going into the GB Junior trial system. He attended a training camp in Nottingham during half term, and got a very good erg result. There will be an erg test and a sculling time trial to complete this term, and we wish him the best of luck.
We have just taken delivery of a beautiful new Stampfli coxless quad scull. It is designed with as much adjustability as possible, to allow use by boys and girls, from J16 upwards.
At a preliminary time trial in week three, Piers Barnett was the quickest out of all 26 single scullers, and finished ahead of a Canford sculler who has competed for the GB junior team. The Canford girls were quicker than ours on average. Lotty Stoddart put in the best performance from Bryanston girls, but has now given up the sport.

THE 2004/05 SEASON IS OVER !
A warm thank you to all the parents who came to support us this year and farewell to our leaving seniors and coaches.

Congratulations to PIERS BARNETT on an exceptional score for the J16 group for a 2000m erg....6:42.
Congratulations to the Senior Girls...
on their two event wins at Reading Town Regatta.
Alix Odgers and Charlotte Needham won two very hard races to take the Womens Novice Double Sculls (a total of eight crews). This is the third time they have won in their double in summer regattas. They are now Senior 4 scullers.
Alix and Charlotte joined with Katie Gornall and Milly Walters to make the Girls Four - but they were knocked out by Reading, the eventual winners. However, they then combined with four Canford girls to race in the Womens' Senior 4 Eights straight final. With inspired coxing from Lizzie de Courcy Wheeler the Bryanston/Canford composite stormed home, exacting revenge over Reading by one length. An historic first.
Prizes were presented by old Bryanstonian Tony Durant, and the regatta was elegantly organised by one of our girls' father, Peter Needham.
The D Boys raced in the J14 B Quads event (three crews).
All raced well - the A crew had the best performance but were knocked out by Shiplake A in the semi finals.
Alix Odgers is also to be congratulated on finally breaking the eight minute barrier in her last ever 2000m erg test at Bryanston.
She scored 7:55.3.
The WESSEX JUNIOR INVITATION REGATTA was a huge success. Details and results will follow but it is a very busy time !
The C Boys B crew won MJ15 Quads and The C Girls won WJ15 Coxed Fours.
We also won three events at Marlow Town Regatta:
Alix Odgers/Charlotte Needham WNov 2x
Sam Bigg MNov 1x
Anna Bourne/Minnie Griffiths WJ15 2x
News from National Schools and The Buffalo Dinner at Leander to follow..
Coate Water Park Regatta near Swindon.
Unfortunately this event turned into a survival exercise. Because of continuous torrential rain, junior events were abandoned after about an hour's racing. Well done to all our D's, and C girls for coping.
CONGRATULATIONS to the winners from the senior events:
Piers Barnett and Will Woodford won the Mens S4 doubles - a straight final against the Royal Navy (who perhaps should have done better in the conditions !) and Southampton.
Alix Odgers and Charlotte Needham won the Womens Novice Doubles. There were seven crews. They won their heat narrowly, and went on to win the final against Monmouth and Pangbourne by 3 lengths.

With no days or fixtures lost to flooding, and some pleasing results from some of the Heads, the term has been an enjoyable success. The D's have enjoyed their introduction to sculling, which culminated very nicely in the Minihead races. At the buffet supper, we were treated to an amazing and inspiring talk from the trans Atlantic rower Mark Stubbs.
The C's, B's and seniors have worked hard and raced well and brought home several good results. We wish you all a relaxing holiday and hope you are looking forward to your summer rowing.

HAPPY NEW YEAR
The Spring term is off to a good start. We have 55 new J14's learning to scull, plenty of J15's, and a select group of committed seniors.
We are disappointed to anounce that the Schools Head of the River Race has removed all J14 and J15 quad sculls from the event, so we are unlikely to enter any D's or C's. We are looking for alternatives.
Plans for the SWITZERLAND trip are well under way. We have 22 C's and 5 seniors going, with 6 staff. Fingers crossed for good weather - a recent GB junior team camp returned from Sarnen recently having hardly been on the lake because of strong winds.
ALL PARENTS OF C AND D ROWERS WILL RECEIVE AN INVITATION TO THE INTERNAL MINIHEAD RACE AND BUFFALO BUFFET ON SATURDAY 12 TH MARCH. THIS IS A VERY PLEASANT AND RELAXED OCCASION AND A CHANCE TO MEET EACH OTHER AND THE COACHES.
|
Sunday
5th December |
The Autumn Term has been going very well. We have enthusiastic new coaches (Clare Leake from Durham, Will Oliver from UVa, and Vasi Yiannoulis from Harvard), plenty of space on the river, and have not lost any training because of flooding. Results from the Head races have been very encouraging. One or two individuals have been performing very well on ergs too (results to follow).
The BPA kindly donated a Rowperfect erg (a closer simulation of being in a boat) and a new coxbox to the Club.
The Buffaloes have kindly donated a new model Concept 2 erg.
We have taken delivery of a new Janousek single for boys (to replace a written off boat).
After Wycliffe, we will be rounding the term off with some informal races on Monday.
Numbers will surge as usual next term, as we welcome over 50 D's to the river, and we have more C's than in the previous year.
We are beginning to make plans for the next training trip to Switzerland.

Monday
26th July |
The
2003/04 season is over.
The Club
is very pleased with the results.
We
have had a total of
nine
outright event wins and many runners-up places in
our summer regattas. In the Schools Head, the
overall results were very encouraging - although no
single crew was particularly oustanding, EVERY crew
proved to be competitive, and most finished at
least half way up their event. In the Autumn, the
devoted senior boys and girls also did well in the
small boat Head races.
All these
results, which are spread across all the age
groups, coupled with the strong performance by the
C's at the National Schools Regatta, add up to a
good achievement and exactly match our targets. For
a Club with limited numbers of committed rowers and
limited water, we cannot expect much
more.
Most
results
from the Summer term are now posted in
'results'.
Thank
you
to all parents who supported the end of term
regatta,
despite the early drenching and 'false start'
!!

RECORD
OF
6.23
Erg fans might like to know that
means he kept his
500m split time on an average of
1.36.
Try rowing at 1.36 to see what its like !! This was
an exceptional performance; one of the best in the
country amongst the GB Junior candidates.
Results are in from Walton regatta. The
D Boys did well
to finish runners up in the MJ14 4x event, after
winning a thrilling semi-final against the Oratory
School.
Mark
Roberts was our only entry at the
National Schools Regatta this year.
He competed in the extremely competitive
Championship Single Sculls event and did well to
reach the semi finals.
The 17th May was not the most successful of
summer regatta weekends for the club !
Despite being out in force, we didn't manage to win
any events, although the B girls Four and D Boys
Quad got fairly close. Look at the results page if
you dare.

The trip to
Switzerland
was superb. Although the weather was not as magical
as last year, we still had two fantastic days, two
less good but rowable days, and two rough days. All
the organisation worked well and we even had a
visit from Steve Oxlade. Winners of the epic mixed
double sculls competition were Sarah Dunnill and
George Catto. In the pupil v staff challenge, the
Hoskins/Hirsch scratch double narrowly triumphed
over the Dodson/Earnshaw team, and the less said
about the staff four the better.
Congratulations to Mark
Roberts on a new boys' erg record of
6.28 and on receiving an invitation to a GB Junior
Assessment Camp this holiday.

Results from the end of term
House
Regatta and the
National
Championships are
now posted.
I wish all our rowers,
coaches and supporters a fantastic summer
holiday.
It has been a good year for
us, thanks to everyone's hard work.
The National Rowing League
schools section has been divided into premier and
first divisions. Our girls are currently
3rd
out of 42 in the first division, with a points
total which would place them 16th out of 20 in the
premier division. We are likely to be promoted back
to the premier division next year. The boys have
gained slightly more points than the girls, and are
20th out of 65 in the first division. Every squad
has made a contribution to our points totals...well
done.
Congratulations
to the D Boys A Quad on winning J14 B Quad Sculls
at Reading Town Regatta.
Chris Parnell, Tom Page,
Matt Briggs, Marcus Evans , Theo Evans.
They rowed over in their heat after St.
Georges scratched.
They won the final convincingly against Abingdon
and Winchester.
Elsewhere, there were mixed fortunes, but some
crews got through their heats at Richmond:
Well done to Giles Vidgeon, Mark Roberts, Chris
Taylor, Henry Dodson, Alec Greenwell, and Ed
Hallinan.
The senior girls had no luck at Reading Town.
The C Girls
performed very well at Peterborough Junior
Regatta.
They won their heat of four boats against
Worcester, Star Club, and Cheltenham to get a place
in the final directly.
In the final, they raced very well, but were
narrowly squeezed into 4th place by 2 feet by Kings
Worcester.
Nevertheless, to finish 4th out of 10 in a high
quality event is an excellent result and forms
another part of a track record they can be proud
of.

The C Girls won the WJ15 Quads.
The C Boys were runners-up in the MJ15
Quads.
The D Girls were runners-up in the WJ14 Quads.
The next day, at
Thames Valley
Park Regatta, the C Girls put in an
excellent performance in a more competitive field.
The quad won their heat and finished runners-up in
the final by one length. This was out of a total
entry of nine boats and served to confirm that
Bryanston is continuing to compete at a high
level.

The trip to
SWITZERLAND
was an outstanding
success.
There were no
hitches, the weather was amazing, and the rowers
behaved extremely well, even when they were asked
to row at 7am. (I would point out that the coaches
were up earlier defrosting the blade handles !)
They completed more miles on the water than they
would in a half of a normal term at
school.
We will organise
photographs, a video, and hopefully some images for
the website, at the start of the Summer Term.
Also there were the Lithuanian National Squad, some
of UL, and we even bumped into Bob Janousek's
former scout master...who had no idea that Bob had
become a famous boat maker, but saw the name on
some of our boats.
The former owner of
the hotel, Mr Townend, gave us an inspiring talk at
our final breakfast about how the Hotel Waldheim
started the connection with other teams training in
Switzerland, and how in former years they had
hosted some of the GB Olympic team...many famous
names including Steve Redgrave.
We must thank the
Buffaloes and the Headmaster for their assistance
with the funding of the trip.
Other news: Seniors
will be training at the Eton Rowing Lake for a few
days before term. If anyone is not sure of the
arrangements, please phone the coach i/c Mr Taylor
(who will be back at home on Monday 15th) on 01258

Despite a varying head wind giving one of the
divisions a large advantage, it was a great
all-round performance from the Club, coming home
with two gold medals, one silver, and two bronze
(plus four 4th places) out of a total of 16 entries
spread across 13 events. If we think back to the
miserable flooded times of this time last year,
this is something to be very positive about as we
come towards the end of the first term. A big
thankyou
to the contingent of parents who turned out to
support, braving the mud, wind, and distance to the
car park !! |

The
Boat
Club Dinner
in honour of Michael Ricketts' retirement was a
wonderful occasion, although I must admit things
went a little hazy for me round about 4am (as did
my photographs) ! It was magical to see so many
OB's from the last decade or so. Apparently,
Michael was spotted in Church the next day still
beaming from the occasion. He and I would like to
thank everyone who attended immensely.

Although there were no event wins there were some
highlights and the D Girls were inspiring at
Peterborough. |

The
Buffalo
Dinner
at Leander
was a marvellous success. Alan Shrimpton and David
Jackson spoke with great wit and affection about
Michael Ricketts' dedication and hard work.
Michael's reply was equally amusing and
affectionate. There were one or two tears being
held back, I suspect. |

The visit
from ROWLEY
DOUGLAS,
Olympic Gold Medal winning GB Mens Eight cox, was a
great success. He christened a boat "Permission to
Shoot Me" at the front of school and gave us a very
inspiring talk and question session. |
